Nuts & Bolts: Design and engineering features of Rivian automotive

| 10/31/2011

Rivian considers the design and engineering features of its car proprietary — patents are pending on some features, it says — and did not provide a schematic of the car's construction. Florida Trend created this graphic from information gathered during the reporting of the story. It's intended to show how Rivian will build its car in modules that are constructed individually, then attached to each other mechanically.

Nuts & Bolts

1. The center module — made largely of aluminum — houses the passenger compartment and engine.

2. The front module includes the front suspension and wheels.

3. The roof module is attached only after the other modules are in place and the seats, dashboard and steering and electrical systems are connected.

4. The rear module includes the rear suspension and wheels.

5. The car's skin is non-structural, composed of thermo plastic that is mechanically attached after the car is built.
